Artists taking the lead
Lionheart project
Three giant hand-crocheted lions will travel the region and beyond in a re-imagining of Richard the Lionheart’s crest, from May to December 2012.
Shauna Richardson is a Leicestershire artist known for her realistic life-size crochet animal creations, a body of work she calls ‘Crochetdermy’. In a departure from her regular practice, Shauna has spent two years crocheting three giant lion skins, using 36 miles of ‘Swaledale’ wool from sheep grazing in the Peak District, in a major one-off commission for the Cultural Olympiad.
The Lionheart Project is the East Midlands’ Artists Taking the Lead project, one of 12 commissions by Arts Council England and the UK Arts Councils, as a unique contribution to the UK Cultural Olympiad.
