Background

The London Games will require 70,000 Games-time volunteers in order to run the event successfully. London will recruit volunteers from the whole of the UK ensuring that the volunteers reflect the diverse nature of the UK population.

Following the regional consultation exercise it was recognised that volunteering will play a major part in almost all of the other key activity areas. Therefore volunteering is now considered as an embedded theme. All key activity area leads are responsible for considering how the opportunities for volunteering will be maximised in their sector. Regarding specific London 2012 volunteers we are awaiting London 2012’s guidance on how they intend to recruit volunteers and the requirements volunteers will be expected to meet. We will continue to work hard to influence London 2012’s plans for recruiting volunteers to ensure the people of the East Midlands have the opportunity to help stage the London Games in 2012.

What Can I Do Now?

Anyone interested in volunteering for the Games can sign up to receive updates from the London 2012 website. To find out about the latest developments, register your interest at www.london2012.com/volunteering.

Volunteers will be chosen for a number of reasons including their skills and also volunteering experience. Therefore it is important that anyone wishing to volunteer for the London Games should start volunteering within their local community in order to increase their chances of selection. East Midlands Strategy

We have recently completed a consultation exercise to develop a region wide strategy for maximising the benefits of the Games. We have thoroughly reviewed the comprehensive feedback received and this forms the basis of the East Midlands Strategy for the 2012 Games.

To request a hard copy of the document or to find out how you can get involved in helping deliver any aspect of the strategy please email regionalcoordinator@emd.org.uk
