Nottinghamshire County Council announces where local communities can see Olympic Flame

The London 2012 Olympic Torch will be carried across water at the National Water Sports Centre and visit historic Sherwood Forest when it visits the county in the summer, Nottinghamshire County Council has announced.

Nottinghamshire County Council, in partnership with LOCOG (the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games) have revealed which streets and landmarks the Olympic Torch is visiting in June and announced some of inspirational torchbearers from the local community. 

The county council is also delighted to team up with Coca-Cola, the longest continuous sponsor of the Olympics Movement and Presenting Partner of the Olympic Torch Relay, to officially announce some of our Torchbearers in the county.

People living in Nottinghamshire will be able to see the Flame in a number of locations as it tours the county on June 28, celebrate the achievements of the inspirational Torchbearers carrying the Flame in their community and share in the excitement of the Olympic Torch Relay.

Coun John Cottee, Cabinet Member for Culture and Community at Nottinghamshire County Council said: "It will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our local communities across Nottinghamshire to see the Olympic Flame and witness the spectacle of the Olympic Torch Relay.
 
"With news that the route will include Sherwood Forest and the National Water Sports Centre as part of the Olympic Torch’s journey across Nottinghamshire, this announcement really does bring the route to life and will encourage people to get involved in celebrating this historic event. We are looking forward to welcoming inspirational torchbearers to the community.”

Nottingham City Council confirms the streets the Olympic Flame will be carried along

Nottingham residents are invited to welcome the Olympic Flame to their street, celebrate the achievements of the inspirational Torchbearers who will run in their community and share in the excitement of the Olympic Torch Relay.

The route the Olympic Torch will travel on Thursday 28 and Friday 29 June through Nottingham has been announced.

Details of the inspirational Torchbearers selected to carry the flame in Nottingham have also started to be revealed.

Residents are invited to welcome the Olympic Flame to their street, celebrate the achievements of the inspirational Torchbearers who will run in their community and share in the excitement of the Olympic Torch Relay.

The streets along the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay, which can be viewed in full at www.london2012.com/olympictorchrelay, gives street-by-street details and proposed start times for when the Olympic Flame will travel through Nottingham. Residents living in and around Nottingham can find out when it will be travelling along their nearest high street, through their town square or past their local corner shop.

The Torchbearers confirmed to carry the Flame through Nottingham today include those that were successful through the public nomination processes run by LOCOG and the Presenting Partners, Coca Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung. LOCOG has endeavoured to slot all community Torchbearers within an hour of their nomination address so family and friends can cheer them on. Each Torchbearer will wear a white and gold uniform which has been designed by adidas.

The torch will enter Nottingham at 5.55pm on Thursday 28 June, passing through the National Ice Centre as part of an Ice Skating Gala event before it arrives in the Old Market Square as part of the evening celebration event which takes place between 5pm – 7.30pm.

The following day sees the torch set off from Nottingham Castle at 8.14am, passing Nottingham’s famous Robin Hood statue as it makes its way out of the city.

Chesterfield to be part of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay Route

Chesterfield has been confirmed as one of communities to welcome the Olympic Flame as it makes its way along the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay Route on Friday 29th June. 

Cllr John Burrows, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council said: “To see the Olympic Flame in Chesterfield will be a very special moment in our town’s history.  This really will be a once in a lifetime event for many thousands of people”.

Cllr Peter Barr, Mayor of Chesterfield, said: “This is absolutely fantastic news for Chesterfield.  The Olympic spirit touches thousands of people and, even though many may not have the chance to go to London to experience the Games, this gives us an opportunity to play an important part in the London 2012 Olympics."

Radcliffe’s moment to shine

Radcliffe’s moment to shine brought beams of smiles and lit up faces young and old when it was announced today that the village would be part of the Olympic torch route on 28 June 2012. The crowd celebrating this accolade at South Nottinghamshire Academy (SNA) comprised Rushcliffe Borough councillors and staff, Parish Councillors, SNA staff and pupils, people from local community organisations and local residents with special Olympic memories. 

 Local resident and former Olympian Joy Jordan greeted the news with excitement.  She said: “I was a runner in the 1960 Olympics in Rome. I remember enjoying the whole occasion.  I am very much looking forward to next year’s event and I’m sure it will bring the community together.”

Corby celebrates Olympic torch news

Corby's community celebrated the news that they would be visited by the torch relay in style with a cheerleading and swimming display at Corby International Pool.  The torch will be passing through the town on July 2, 2012.

Lord Coe, chairman of the Olympics organising committee, said: “We are thrilled to confirm that Corby will act as a host location for the Olympic Flame, extending an invitation to people in the borough to welcome the torch during its journey around the UK.”

Olympic passion ignited in Bassetlaw

Darlton, East Markham and Tuxford have all been confirmed as the first points on the route of the torch's relay through the county, which passes through Bassetlaw on June 28. 

East Markham Primary School  celebrated the news with a special assembly where they joined by Olympic paracyclist hopeful Crystal Lane.  Assistant head teacher Vanessa Chapman said there had been universal excitement among pupils at the news. "They were so excited I couldn't even carry on the assembly. They were just buzzing about it today".

Fire to meet ice in Nottingham

A special ice skating gala will be held at the National Ice Centre, as well as an evening celebration in Old Market Square, to mark the flame's arrival in the city next year.

Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, said: 'We are thrilled to confirm that the Olympic flame will be visiting the Robin Hood Statue and National Ice Centre as part of its journey around the UK. Olympic Torch set to race into Mansfield

Its flames have burned brightly in Sydney, Athens and Beijing. Now the Olympic Torch is coming to Mansfield, Kirton, Boughton and Edwinstowe on 28th June next year, before trips to Glapwell and Bolsover the following day.

Mansfield swimming star Sam Hynd, who won two medals at the Beijing Paralympic Games, also urged people to line the route and use the torch as an inspiration. “If you have got a dream in sport, you follow that dream,” he said. “If you want to go and see the flame, I recommend you go for it.”

Olympic Torch Relay is coming to East Lindsey

The Olympic Torch Relay is coming to East Lindsey – exactly one month before the start of London 2012. The Torch will visit Louth, Legbourne, Withern, Maltby Le Marsh, Mablethorpe, Trusthorpe, Sutton on Sea, Mumby, Hogsthorpe, Ingoldmells, Winthorpe, Skegness and Wainfleet All Saints as it makes its way from Cleethorpes to Lincoln.

Doreen Stephenson, Leader of East Lindsey District Council, said: "London 2012 presents East Lindsey with some important opportunities and we’ve worked hard to ensure we’re well represented on the Torch route. Today's announcement means people living locally and visitors to our District will be able to be part of the biggest sporting event on earth in East Lindsey and we should be proud of this. We want everyone to line the Torch's route and to celebrate this important national event".
